When things start to get complicated in our career, business, or even work, and you’re already squeezing every last minute out of your schedule, it’s time to resort to hiring people to take some of the burdens away.

Online employees have started to pick up faster than ever since everybody is online now. These people have incredible talents, and you can probably find someone as good as you or even better in a matter of minutes.

The only caveat is that you don’t get to see them face to face and some of those profiles you’re looking at could be exaggerated a bit. It’s time for you to find out how you can filter the rotten eggs from the good ones. Today, we’ll talk about the three golden rules to keep in mind when hiring your first employee online.

Don’t just look at the surface. Dig deeper.

When we start looking for someone to get the job done, we usually look at someone’s credentials and assume that if they have the skills, they’ll do well. The problem is, most of the time, it doesn’t go the way you want.

Yes—they may have the technical skills, but when it comes to doing actual work, they might have no experience yet, which leads to high expectations for you but the low output from your employee.

The best way to mitigate this is to know your employee first before getting them on board the team.

Just like when you research and do background checks for your clients, learn about the person you’re hiring. You have to be able to trust them for you to give them the keys to your business. And for them to be able to provide you with good results, they have to know that you are giving them your trustfully.

Great employees always reciprocate your trust through excellent output, fantastic work ethic, and good communication throughout. And that’s another thing we’ll be talking about in the next section.

They have to know how to communicate with you.

The worst thing that you can experience when hiring employees online is to get someone who doesn’t consistently communicate with you.

It’s difficult (and scary) enough to hire someone you can’t see or hear in person but for them not to be able to communicate frequently with you even through email or chat is a nightmare.

There are times when deadlines come up only for you to find out that they haven’t been working on the project since you hired them. Or maybe you asked them to research something thoroughly, and when the report is due, they say they didn’t understand what they were supposed to do in the first place.

I’ve experienced this a lot throughout my career, and it is a massive headache to deal with this.

So when you decide to hire people online, make sure that they can communicate well. They chat with you or the team every day if necessary, you get a constant stream of updates for the various projects they’re involved in, and before you sign off, be sure that everything is clear with them so when they start work, and you leave them to it, you can expect results right away.

You have to understand that many of them live in more deprived areas.

When looking for employees, you might have opted to hire the ones who charge a lower rate than usual compared to people who might live in your area.

Yes, you get a good bargain, and there are quite a number of talented people from across the world; however, you have to understand that some of them live in conditions that make working online a little bit tricky.

For example, the Internet in the Southeast of Asia can be a bit hit or miss. There are connection problems occasionally, and the service they give their residents can be subpar.

You have to be patient with them when they explain that their Internet just went down the whole day because that’s what living in that region means. And another thing is that you paid for a cheaper service, so it’s a case of, “you get what you pay for.”

Of course, it isn’t always that way. There are times when working with employees can be significant, and when it is, you get good results too.

A way to fix this is to give them the materials and supplies they need to do their job well. Maybe have them connect to a better internet provider or give them a better workstation to work with. To some, it might seem trivial, but to these employees, they can become your most significant assets in your company.
